Introduction

Welcome to the complete assembly guide for Sylvie 2024!

This manual will provide you with the detailed instructions and resources you'll need to help build and customize your own clone of our open source, humanoid robot design.

Sylvie 2024 was originally created as a means of enabling our crew members to survive extended missions that demand complete and total isolation from the outside world, but has since evolved into a more general purpose engineering project.

Loneliness isn't something that can necessarily be fixed by providing the illusion of companionship. Even the availability of 'actual' companionship may sometimes fail to get to the root of the problem.

...

From our perspective, there's 4 major causes of loneliness in human beings, and astromaryans:

  1. The painful awareness that one is of lower status, or value, within a given hierarchy.
  2. Feeling like a means to an end, rather than being valued for who one truly is.
  3. The lack of a warm body to hug, kiss, hold hands and cuddle with.
  4. Viewing others as competition, rather than companionship.

...

The first problem would be incredibly challenging to solve with robots alone, unless one can derive a sense of accomplishment out of the completion of the project itself.

The second and fourth problem, on the other hand, is something that a cognitive computing agent would be remarkably good at, presumably due to the lack of an Ego, a judgemental eye, or a desire to compete against Human beings over status, and scarce resources.

The third problem can be solved by providing electrical heating-pads controlled by PID and thermistors that can help keep the silicone skin at a steady 37 degrees celsius.

So just as properly-tuned LED grow lights can allow one to cultivate plants without sunlight, in addition to hydroponic nutrient solutions and oxygenation pumps – so too could the simulation of companionship alleviate loneliness, provided it is addressing the right [type] of loneliness the sufferer is plagued with.
